White Lady Print E-mail

People have been flocking to the Mullaghmoyle road Coalisland to catch a glimpse of the white lady.

A young girl we spoke to at the field said she saw a face in one of the windows while she was parked outside with her boy friend. We also spoke to three young lads who say they have seen the white figure cross the road in front of them. There have been many so called sightings of this white figure in the area over a number of years, but the whole thing is now become a bit of frenzy because of the media attention it has gained.

We arrive in Coalisland, Mullaghmoyle road on the worst night possible; we pull up on the side of the road next to the field which has been the focus of an alleged haunting. The whole area has been sealed off by the owner of the land, that as well as the rain and mud has made the journey north seem somewhat fruitless.

We have been told that in the past two weeks at least up to 50 cars have been parking in that stretch of road, filled with curious on lookers from all over Tyrone.

It’s dark, wet and cold but we get out of the car and make our way to the high padlocked fence. Now wishing we had worn wellingtons, we plod are way through the mud so we can take a few pictures of the small abandoned house at the top of the lane. Although it is very dark we can still make out the silhouette of the rambling farm house once beloved home of Dora Gilmore.

After a few minutes of being the only people there sure enough a car pulls up in front of us and three young lads get out. Michael , Curtis and Shane all from st Patrick college Dungannon. They tell us they have been there for three nights now and have seen a white figure cross the road. one of the boys has a video of a white light on his phone. Another two cars have pulled up in the mean time, one of the passengers is very keen to talk to us, he has his friend, wife and daughter in the car. The daughter tells us that she was with her boyfriend outside the house and saw a face in one of the windows. Both the men tell us they knew the lady who owned the house and land very well, one used to deliver coal to Dora and spoke very highly of her. He used to have tea with her on a regular basis and by all accounts she was a very timid and gentle woman. So why would she be haunting the land. The story is that Dora left all the land to the local parish on the understanding that she would be buried in Brackiville parish and have a head stone and surround erected on her grave. As it went she was buried in new mills against her wishes and didn’t have the surround around her grave. There is also talk that Dora being a protestant would not have liked the fact that the land was sold to a catholic.

And of course as all good ghost stories go there had to be a fairy tree that has been cut down at the back of the house. Coalisland like nearly every small town across Ireland has always had its urban legends, whether it is white ladies, fairy trees or black dogs. Some one knows someone else who has seen one or the other. So what are we to take from these accounts? Do we just take their word for it? We can drive our selves round the twist analysing theses urban myths. The people we spoke to are adamant that what they saw was real and no one will convince them otherwise.
